CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

The Club Championship is single elimination match play, with rounds played over the course of the season and the final round for all flights on August 4.
Flights are based on handicap as follow:

Championship Flight: 0–18
 B Flight: 19-24
C Flight: 25–30
D Flight: 31 and higher

Any player may elect to compete in the Championship Flight, regardless of handicap. If she elects to do so, she then cannot compete in the flight determined by her handicap. For purposes of determining seed, her handicap will be capped at 18, the maximum for the Championship Flight. Any player can also choose to play in a lower flight but cannot play in a higher flight. In the case of two handicaps being equal the ranking will be determined by lot. All matches will be played without using a handicap.

In order to be eligible to compete in the Club Championship, each player must have submitted three scores from tournament play. SCWGA tournaments and all OHWGA sponsored tournaments count as tournament play.

There must be a minimum of two players in each flight. Players will be seeded in their flight from lowest to highest handicap. If you are playing in a different flight than your handicap falls, please notify the tournament chair or indicate the flight you would like to play in on the sign up sheet. The sign-up deadline is June 22nd and each round will be completed within the two week time period.

The first round will pair players as follows and must be played by July 11th: 1 vs. 8; 2 vs. 7; 3 vs. 6; 4 vs. 5. The second round will pair seeds as follows and must be played by July 25th: Winner of 1 vs. 8 plays winner of 4 vs. 5; winner of 2 vs. 7 plays winner of 3 vs. 6. The final round will be played on Saturday August 4 with a raindate of Sunday August 5.

If more than eight players sign up in a flight, there will be a qualifying round that must be played by July 1st. If 9 players, 8 will play 9. If there are 10 players, 8 will play 9 and 7 will play 10, etc. The tournament Chairperson will advise those affected.

A player who cannot play an opponent within the time limit forfeits.

The cart cost will be shared equally by all riders in the foursome. If there are three riders, each rider will pay one-third of the total cart cost.

In case of a tie at the end of 18 holes, there will be a playoff. It will be played like a 19th hole, hitting over the pond in front of the pro shop to the far green. The player with the best score will win the match. This will be repeated until a winner is determined.

It is the responsibility of the winner of each match to call the tournament director with results. Play results will be posted on the OHWGA bulletin board. Trophies will be award to the winners in each flight and gift certificates will be awarded to runners up.

A player may not withdraw in the middle of a club championship round without good cause. Any player who does so will be disqualified from competing in the Club Championship the following year.

MATCH PLAY SCORING

Golfers compete hole by hole, and the golfer who wins the most holes wins the match.

If your score is less than your opponent, you win the hole. If your opponent’s score is lower, she wins the hole. Essentially, ties don’t count, since it’s the most holes won that determines the winner.

When you are keeping your scorecard, you will mark a “+1” if you win the hole, a “-1” if you lose the hole and an “E” if you tie the hole for the first hole. On the second hole you will either add 1 (if you win the hole), subtract one (if you lose the hole), or remain the same if it is a tie.  This will give you a running score as you play your round.

Match play does not have to go the full 18 holes. They can, but often one player will achieve an insurmountable lead and the match will end early. For example, if Jane is ahead by 3 holes and there are only two holes left to play, the match is over, since Jane cannot be beaten.
